Six consecutive months of manufacturing expansion and ongoing supply chain constraints are forcing
Singapore precision engineers to look beyond their home base.
Singapore’s manufacturing PMI rose to 50.6 in February 2026, the highest reading in nearly a year, sustaining six consecutive months of expansion. Electronics – accounting for approximately 30% of factory output – led the way, driven by strong demand for AI-related memory chips. The broader precision engineering sector, which provides critical components and solutions to semiconductor, aerospace, biomedical, and advanced electronics industries, is operating in an environment of both elevated demand and acute capacity pressure.
Capacity constraints are structural rather than cyclical. Singapore’s manufacturing base is land-limited, with
industrial real estate costs rising – science park rents grew 5.7% in 2025, and high-tech factory rents increased 3.4%. Labour availability in specialised precision engineering roles remains persistently tight, with the sector competing directly with semiconductor and biomedical manufacturers for the same talent pool. Supply chain disruptions – including avoidance of Red Sea and Suez Canal routes, which has lengthened transit times – are adding further pressure to already strained turnaround schedules.
Singapore’s precision engineering firms are, simultaneously, among the most internationalisation-ready
manufacturers in Southeast Asia. Enterprise Singapore actively supports precision engineering companies in
evaluating overseas markets, with India specifically identified as a market where Singapore companies can produce parts for export while accessing cost-competitive manufacturing. The Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone, organised across nine zones covering manufacturing and logistics among other sectors, is absorbing near-term overflow. But for firms with global supply chain commitments, the location calculus extends beyond the immediate corridor.
The decision-making process in this sector is methodical and relationship-driven. Companies evaluate regulatory predictability, skilled labour availability, infrastructure quality, and proximity to key customers – not headline incentive packages. By the time a formal investment announcement is made, the location decision has typically been made months earlier through existing advisor and commercial networks.
Singapore’s precision engineering expansion is creating a pipeline of outbound investment that is building quietly. The destinations that are already embedded in those networks are the ones that will close it.
